1. Perfect Scissor
The perfect scissor is much more than just a good pair of scissors. An extension of your hand, the silent partner in creating your signature uncompromisable style. Your scissor should give freedom and flexibility in your cutting to make it effortlessly second nature. The weight and size should fit in your hand like a glove to allow consistent flow. When deciding on your scissor first assess the material, I personally desire Cobalt in all my scissors. A material added over steal to create a strengthened yet light finish in return for longevity and reliability for an extended time before resharpening. I next would look at the shape of the handle and length of the blade, the optimum length for myself is always 5 inches. Having a 5-inch scissor allows you to be more precise as well as versatile in your approach. I also recommend to every student of mine to own a pair of thinning scissors. A beautiful miss understood tool that allows you to achieve a result in the texture of the hair that the classic scissor cannot. Understanding when and how to use the thinning scissor can be the secret to making a good haircut an amazing haircut. Your attention to your scissor must continue way after you’ve chosen the perfect pair for yourself. You need to be cleaning and oiling your scissors daily at the end of every day ensuring hygiene, as well as removing product build-up which over time will result in less efficiency and damaging the blade. After 10 years in the industry, I finally found and kept my very own perfect scissor with leaf Scissors. For my cutting scissor I would no be without my Leaf Cobalt Scissor and for my thinners check out the Leaf Scissor Black Edition.

2. Matte Paste
Matte Paste for the masses. The most versatile and undeniably my most used product. I’m bringing Matte Paste in at number 2 for its capability against multiple hair types and lengths of hair. Applying this product to damp hair before styling is my preferred way to use but can absolutely be used on both wet and dry hair alike. Matte Paste can be used for everything from controlled pompadours to curly texture when used correctly. After being a secret weapon in my kit bag for many years I’ve tried and tested my fair share and believe I’ve finally narrowed it down to my favourite – Sebastian Craft Clay Matte Clay.
3. The Cordless Wahl Senior
What is the best clipper? A question I have been asked throughout my career more times than I can remember. Sure, I’ve dabbled along the way but The Wahl Senior has outshone them all. With the power that cuts through the hair with ease, effortlessly manoeuvres through haircuts thanks to its lightweight finish you would not catch me with any other clipper. When finding your perfect clipper always keep it cordless with significant battery life, find the optimum weight as too light you are compromising quality but too heavy you are compromising comfort. Keep your clippers oiled and clean at the end of every day just as you would your scissor.
4. The Cesibon Cutting Comb
Isn’t a comb, just a comb?? No, my friends, unfortunately, they’re not. A good comb slots right between you and your scissor as your silent partner to success. A comb too stiff or too bendy you are comprising the cleanliness of sections and risk of continuous snapped combs. Evenly spaced pointed teeth allows hair to freely comb into your sections to assist in clean, consistent sections and cutting. A bad workman blames his tools, not at Hair In Motion. Grab yourself a Cesibon comb and reap the benefits for yourself.
5. A Diffuser
Put your nozzle down and attach your diffuser. A force to be reckoned with to create every style from effortless texture, super tight curls, taming frizz, textured quiffs and natural beauty, be sure to keep your defuser close by. Moving with trends and client’s favoured finishes I now use my diffuse for 80% of my work. Other than straight hair, play around with your defuser on multiple hair types and see how versatile this tool can make your work. Combined with matte paste or sea salt spray and watch this finish will fast become your new favourite.
Haver I mentioned products you too can’t live with out? Let me know whats in your survival kit in the comments. Peace out until next time x
